Tell me more about how ABA could help change our environment to help our child.

“When a flower doesn't bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower."-Alexander Den Heijer
An enriching environment can give you and your child the tools to understand each other.
Changing the environment around us can help shape the way we learn. Arranging the environment in a way to help children with Autism learn and grow allows everyone the opportunity to benefit. ABA works on increasing appropriate behaviors and giving you and your child the tools to communicate in a way that they are understood.
What do you mean function?
Function of behavior refers to the reason the behavior is occurring. Is it attention, automatic, tangible, or escape? Does your child want or need your attention? Does your child use it to soothe themselves as a type of self-stimulatory behavior? Does your child want access to something they cannot have? Does your child want to "get away" from something they do not want or do not want to do? These are questions that can be answered using foundational skills taught to parents at Changing Tides Behavioral Therapy.
Do parents participate?
Parents are required not only by Changing Tides to participate, but are also required by insurance. Our goal is not only to help your child, but to help you. It is important that all techniques used with the provider are used with the parents as well. Your BCBA will discuss programs and techniques with you as well as model them. It is important that parents collect data on behavior in home. Consistency is key and can help your child by making sure that their environment feels comfortable.
